STEM

Here is the my exploration name STEM and it the fourth round exploration. In STEM we work with project-based leaning group to implement our project-based learning (PBL) to government school. In class we learn some about PBL and create our own definition also we translate it to Khmer. This how we can implement PBL project to: first our teacher go to Kratie to ask how many teacher interesting in our PBL project. Their four teachers in high school that are interesting to PBL project but they request one thing that when we do our PBL project they want it to relate to their learning curriculum right now. Then our Liger teachers and government teacher decided to choose four topic. There are physic, biology, women right in society, and history. I am in physic (the teacher divide the team )and we talk about potential and kinetic energy that are relate to grade 8 curriculum right now. In my group we got teacher to teach us to get more understanding about our main point. Then we research what are some of our main idea relate to real life. Then we come up with some idea like swing shot, pendulum, and some other stuff. Then we went to Kratie with PBL group and project evaluation group. Then we go to high school and we implemented our PBL project by using the main point for example: our physics project, how can we use the project follow PBL learning not just by learning in the class.

Here are some picture when we in Kratie High School.

Animals guild

I  have been in animal guild what I did was researched about the animals. We have a lot of trip to a lot of place to learned animals from expert. We so focus and we have lot of commitment. Our group created one book about ecology it have about 84  species. How can we made this book. We have 13 students to researched and about 45 students paint. Before we painted the people who researched need to tell the characteristic and habitat. All people in painting needed to practiced learned how to draw and paint. Now we have one book name Cambodia Animals Guild.

Going to Singapore

AT airport

I was immediately so happy when I heard that I would go Singapore! The big reason why we went to Singapore is because my group wanted to join a robot competition. Soon I pictured Singapore. In my mind I saw the ocean around Singapore and it was so beautiful and the city had a lot of tall buildings.DSC_0955 (531x800)

DSC_1052 (800x531)
When I started to go on the airplane I was so happy and nervous because it was my first time to go on a plane. On the airplane I had five more friends and three teachers. I felt nervous because it was very high in the air and I thought, “If I fall off, what should I do?” On the airplane I played some minecraft and talked about what we were going to do in Singapore. Also, I asked some questions to my teacher, like  “Can I go to the sea or the playground?” but my teacher Max said, “I don’t think so.”

In Singapore airport

When I arrived in Singapore I felt so happy because the roads in Singapore are so beautiful. When we looked out of the taxi we saw the buildings and a lot of cars. Singapore has a lot of technology, like the robots in the airport that can talk by themselves and the train that can drive by itself.

In Singapore American school
In Singapore American school

We went to the Singapore American School because we wanted to learn more about  lego robotics. The students at Singapore American School taught us about the robot and shared about some competitions that they had done and some challenges that they had had. They tried very hard to explain some of their challenges to you. In Singapore American School I learned some robot programming that was very new to me and I tried some challenges that were hard for my team, like getting the people into any red place and making the houses higher than before.

The day before I competition we went to a museum. It was so amazing in the Singapore Science Museum.  For example, there was a ball that are always moving around the museum.  After I went to the museum I went to lunch and I could try other food, like fried noodles with only pepper, pizza and bread with strawberries. When I met my host family for the first time I felt a little bit nervous and I did not say anything to my host family. The only thing is, I needed to stay five days with my host family. At night I talked a little bit about Liger to my host family because I learned what they like and what they don’t like. At midnight, I played some games with the kids in my host family, like fantasy football, row the boat and  baseball.

The first time at the competition my friends and I just went and tried to see if the robot was working or not. Then the next day we went for the real competition. The first thing we needed to do was present to the coaches about why we made that kind of robot. Then we took our robot to the competition table and our robot could move its hand up and down and  right to left. The robot needed to do a lot of things, like push the car to the red area, take the pet to the house and go across the hill.

On our last day we went to the clean water organization and boat hotel.  We also went to eat lunch on a hill in Singapore. When it was night time we went to the Singapore Zoo. At the zoo I could see lions, tigers, elephants and other animals. In the the zoo, I felt a little bit scared because I saw some alligators open their mouths at me and my host family. Then I went into the house of the fruit bats.

UWC (United World College) is a school that has about 4000 students. UWC teaches many subjects. The thing that I liked in UWC was the library. It has more than 1000 books.

Cambodia!!!

I felt a little bit sad when I was on the plane on my way back to Cambodia because I missed my host family, but I told myself, “Don’t be sad of changing because in your life there is always change.’’ Then I felt better and I could learn, “In life you are not always happy but you can’t let sad feelings stop you.”

Newspaper

Exploration Name: Newspapers

Exploration Dates: October 7 to November 19

Number of students: 12

Essential Questions:

(1) Why do we have newspapers?

(2) Historically, what have newspapers sought to do?

(3) How is the purpose enhanced or diminished by external factors (freedom of speech, infrastructure)?

(4) What do reporters do and what are their ethical responsibilities?

(5) What is the process of creating a newspaper from start to finish? What role does technology play?

Description:

In our newspaper class we had a lot of hard things to do but there were fun things to do too. The first thing we did was get introduced to some of the old and famous newspapers. Later on we got the name of one of the newspapers and did the research in pairs or groups. On Friday afternoon we had assembly so we did our presentation one by one. Everyday we learned new things about newspapers and it was very exciting. The most hard and exciting part was we made our own newspaper about our school. Also we went on a late night trip to the Phnom Penh Post printing press at 10:00pm. It was so late we got to sleep in the teacher apartment. The name of our newspaper is Liger Post. We sold it at NISC, ICan, coffee shops and restaurants. At the end we made about $280. We gave some to the Documentary group to do the bike race and some to the orphanage at Siem Reap. Each student on the team also got some money, about $8 each.

Future Jobs

Exploration Name: Future Jobs

Exploration Dates: January 20th – March 7th

Number of Students: 12

Essential Questions:

1. How will jobs that help Cambodia look different in the future?

2. What motivates people to choose the job they do?

Description:

During the round four exploration we learned about Future Jobs. In Future Jobs we had to develop the presentation questions (ask more questions). We asked more questions because in our Exploration we had a lot of trips that taught us about the jobs in the real life. After that we learned about Nanotechnology, Water crisis and Alternative fuels. Nanotechnology is smaller than atoms. One thing we learned was that it is waterproof and can go underground without breaking. In Water crisis topic we learned that 70% of the Earth is seawater and 30% is land. But just 3% is good water. 884 million people don’t have good water and nearly 1,000,000,000 don’t have water. The last topic was Alternative fuel. We noticed that the gas can live 60 years, oil can live 60 years and coal can live 1000 years. Last we prepared for our job shadow on the next day. Job shadow means to go to the real place of work to do the job with the people that are in the job that helps Cambodia a lot. All of us went to different places with our partner. For example, some of us went to World Vision and some went to Northbridge International School.

Toys

Exploration Name: Simple Machines (Toys)

Exploration Dates: August 12 – September 26

Number of students: 13

Essential Questions:

1.What are simple machines?

2.What is mechanical advantage?

3.How can simple machines be used to create engaging interactive toys and why is toy                          creation a powerful form of learning?

Description:

In our Exploration class we learned about simple machines and how to make toys using cams (it is like a circle, like wheel and axle) + simple machines. Simple machines can make some jobs easier to do. We learned about wedges, levers, pulleys, inclined planes, gears, screws, wheels and axles. Each of these things have different advantages and disadvantages. Levers are the most used in real life. Levers can be anything you hold. Ex. sword handle, computer lid, all of those things are levers. When we started we learned about how to use simple machines in our toys. We watched a lot of videos to understand and to get new ideas. We first built toys for testing our project. It worked but it was too small and not good enough. We researched more and then we got more ideas from books, computers and videos. When we had enough knowledge and enough information, we got an idea and we worked in teams. We thought that to make our toy more interactive, we have to get some paint to make it colorful. When we finished the toy we planned a trip with our teacher to Takeo province. Our trip was not long just half a day travel and half a day at NFO to teach the students there about simple machines and how to make toys. We came back to set up for our presentation in the big area. All of Liger students came to see us and learn from each other.

Robotics Description

Exploration Name: Robotics

Exploration Dates: Exploration 3: November 20 – January 17 and Exploration 4: January 20 – March 7

Number of Students: 6

Description: In our Exploration class we learned about natural disasters and how to make the robot with the lego bricks. The lego brick is really complicated to do the robot because it is small. The lego box has four sensors: ultrasonic sensor, color sensor, touch sensor and gyro sensor. The ultrasonic sensor is used for measuring the length. The color sensor is used for measuring the reflection of color. The touch sensor is used for touching something that tells about the place. It will send the information to the brain. We learned about how to program, build and about natural disasters. Each of these are very important and it gave lots of advantages because we needed to use all of the skills to do it. Building is the most important, which gives most advantages too because building is the first step to make the robot. Programming is the most difficult part because we need to write the code to make the robot work. When we started to learn our group needed to think about the ideas to make a robot that can do the challenge and complete the four goals of the challenge. They are Mechanical Design, Strategy & Innovation, Robot Performance and Programming. The natural disaster was divided into three parts: Presentation, Innovation Solution means how creative was the solution that we did and Research. The challenge was we needed to make the robot knock down the building, tsunami, take the track and the ambulance to the end zone. The students needed to work ìn a team with six people to have success in the FIRST® LEGO® League in Singapore. We had to look and watch lots of videos to get more ideas. We also looked at the rules of the game in order to learn more about the challenge. Then we went to Singapore to do the challenge.
